In 6, Inside Models, we ran across an interesting point while discussing how data should be passed from the controller down to the view. It is not unlikely that a view needs more data than can be managed by the controller method that invokes the view. This typically happens when the view incorporates some fixed data that is shared with other views (for example, menus and breadcrumbs) but for some reason was not stored in a master page. In 6, I discussed the use of a registry object to store any data that is global so that the controller can simply reference the registry to populate the view model object the view is based on. However, I also hinted at another solution that many members in the community employed or at least discussed. This alternate solution is based on an action filter. To put the solution in context, imagine that you find yourself needing to pass data to the view that is not strictly dependent on what the current action method does. That is not data calculated by the method; rather, it is global data stored somewhere that you don t want the view to retrieve on its own so that you can avoid having (too much ) logic and complexity leak into the view. The logic of the action filter is simple: it accesses the data and loads it into the ViewData collection for the view to retrieve it. Let s start with the controller code:

With this policy in place, all PocketPCs will be allowed to sync regardless of specific features the phone supports. Currently, these policies can only be managed through EMS cmdlets. The default ActiveSync policy allows any device to synchronize.

An interesting new feature in Service Pack 1 is for the ability to share calendars externally without federation. Similar to federated sharing, an administrator must enable and configure the feature to be available. Once enabled, users can share their calendar with anyone through OWA. By default, Internet Calendar Sharing is disabled. There are two types of URLs that can be published: restricted and public. With restricted URLs, the URL is obfuscated and must be sent to the external user directly. Public certificates, on the other hand, can be searchable on the Internet. This is shown with examples in Table 4-3.

Additional security measures are in place to protect Exchange because this feature exposes data to anonymous external users. First, the feature was created with total isolation from other Exchange resources. Sharing was implemented with a dedicated virtual directory. Second, the application uses a separate application pool. Third, the http access is limited to the dedicated virtual directory. Finally, throttling is enabled to prevent excessive resource consumption. Requests are throttling both on requests per mailbox and limits on CPU utilization per Client Access Server.

At times, clients consume server resources to the point where everyone is affected. For example, some third-party search programs can send a large number of RPC requests when they perform indexing. The sheer number of RPC requests from these clients can cause performance problems on the backend. Exchange 2010 uses client-throttling policies to prevent this situation. A default client-throttling policy is configured when the Exchange organization is created. The default policy can be customized or additional policies can be created. The default policy settings are shown in Table 4-4. Do not make changes directly to the default policies create a copy of the default and make the changes to the new policy. This will enable an administrator to quickly revert back to defaults if the need arises.

The view-model object (or the ViewData collection if you opt for a generic data container) contains just the data that the controller method manipulates directly.
